From culinary applications to natural sponges and traditional medicine this plant begins its versatile life as a vibrant green veggie (harvest at 2" long) similar in taste as a zucchini. Dried luffas reveal a brilliant network of fibers that comprise nature’s perfect sponge. Be sure to provide sufficient support as vines can reach 30’ long. Ideal for an arch trellis. Annual.

  • Full Sun (minimum 6 hours)
  • Plant: 1/2" deep
  • Space: 18 - 24" Germination: 5-14 days
  • Maturity: 110-130 days
  • Soil: moist, well draining, warm soil
  • Hardiness: Zones 3-9

Instructions: Start seeds 6-8 weeks before you plan to plant them outside. Seeds need temperatures around 65-80ºF to germinate. Wait to transplant outdoors until soil is warm and free from danger of last frost. Harvest sponges when luffas are brown and dry on the vine.
