On the most sweltering days of summer, there is nothing like a frozen, fruit-filled treat–especially one you can hold in your hand, at the park or the beach, and have to eat quickly before it melts down your arm. In the sticky heat they are irresistible. With that delicious image in mind, FIELD NOTES presents the 71st Quarterly Edition for summer 2026, “Paletas.”
In the 1940s, Ignacio and Luis Alcázar and their cousin Agustín Andrade left their hometown of Tocumbo, Michoacán, for Mexico City, where they opened a small shop selling handmade paletas made with real fruit and fresh ingredients. Their frozen treats quickly became a hit, and they began franchising the business to friends and family back home.
Before long, thousands of paleterías had opened across Mexico. Since so many were owned by people from Tocumbo, they became known as Las Michoacanas. As Mexican families brought the tradition to the United States, paleterías spread from the Southwest to cities across the country - making it easier than ever to find these refreshing treats.
